FTD's Top Member Award
To excel in this economy is an accomplishment worth recognizing. Mi Lee and Wesley Berry owners of Wesley Berry Flowers are FTD’s Top Member for 2011. This is the sixth year the company has finished in “FTD’s Top 100” out of over 40,000 florists in the United States. “This is the highest achievement in the floral industry and we are very proud of our staff for the high quality of service they provide,” said Wesley Berry.
The Berry’s recently returned from the 100th Anniversary Celebration of FTD that was held in Key Biscayne Florida at which the one hundred most successful FTD florists in the nation were invited. At this event they were presented with a crystal vase inscribed with “Wesley Berry Flowers – FTD Top Member 2011”.
This family owned business was established in 1946. Today they operate five brick and mortar shops servicing all of southeast Michigan and an internet floral business that delivers flowers across the nation. In 1979 Wesley Berry Flowers established The Professional Florists’ Institute a private vocational school licensed by the State of Michigan. Since 1993 Wesley Berry Flowers, has maintained a major internet presence that drop ships flowers from coast to coast. Over the years the business has grown from a small “mom and Pop” shop into a multi-million dollar operation that now ranks among the very top retail florists in the Country.
In April they will celebrate the first anniversary of their flagship store located at 2985 Haggerty Road in Commerce. The new facility is over 10,000 sq. ft. and has a 1,000 sq. ft. walk-in cooler where customers are able to experience over 100,000 150,000 blooms on any given day. It is equipped with state of the art equipment and the latest computer technology. Their special events and wedding consulting and display areas are among the finest in the nation.
When asked what sets you apart from your competitors? Wes responded, “Our commitment to community service is our real key to success.” An example of their commitment is how every year on both, Good Neighbor’s Day in September and on Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday in January they give away over 24,000 roses. Their only request is that people share the roses with others in an effort to increase friendship and peace among persons living in the Detroit metropolitan area.
A personal philosophy of “prepare for the worst, but expect the best” has served Wesley Berry well with the many challenges he has had to face over the years to grow the business. Wes and Mi Lee have been elected to the very select membership of the American Academy of Floriculture (AAF). He served on the Board of the Allied Florist Association and maintains memberships in FTD, Teleflora, Michigan Floral Association and The Society of American Florist.
In 2009 three major awards were received; the NAACP Oakland County Chapter presented its Corporate Leadership Award,” while the Wholesale Florist & Florist Supplier Association (WF&FSA) awarded them its “Retail Florist of the Year for Outstanding Community Involvement” and the West Bloomfield Chamber of Commerce honored Wes by naming him their "Business Person of the Year”.
